Dragons thrash Warriors 46-10 in NRL trial

The Warriors have been handed a reality check, with a 46-10 defeat at the hands of St George Illawarra in their final trial before the start of the NRL season.

In Simon Mannering's last match as skipper, and in his home town of Nelson, the Warriors had their big three on Saturday - new signings Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke, and halfback Shaun Johnson - together on the park for the first time.

But the home side paid for mistakes and had to do plenty of defence on Saturday as they let in eight tries, including two to winger Euan Aitken, who got the scoreboard ticking in the fourth minute.

Josh Dugan had the Dragons' second touchdown near the end of the first quarter, and skipper Gareth Widdop's second conversion on the way to a match haul of 18 points made it 12-0.

Tuivasa-Sheck then produced an excellent long ball for Solomone Kata to dot down and reduce the deficit.

But another Warriors error led to Kurt Mann scoring from a scrum move to help the Dragons to an 18-4 half-time lead.

When the Warriors' defence failed to defuse a Benji Marshall bomb, Tyrone McCarthy scored to open the margin further.

A Marshall cut-out pass sent Aitken over for his second try before Jack de Belin got the Dragons' sixth.

Jonathan Wright did manage a reply for the Warriors, but Widdop then scored from a kick-and-chase.

Former Warrior Siliva Havili added the icing for the visitors with a try from a charging run.

The Warriors open their season against the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium on March 5, two days before the Dragons are away to Melbourne for the round's Monday night fixture.
