The NRL and NSW Rugby League are set to investigate an ugly crowd brawl at a junior league match between Manly and Souths last weekend.

Police were called to Erskineville Oval in inner Sydney after a group of spectators and players allegedly traded blows near the ground's fence.

An eyewitness told Wide World of Sports that a player started the altercation during the Harold Matts and SG Ball games between the two clubs.

"The player wasn't involved in the game but coward punched a member of the crowd," the onlooker said.

"It all quickly escalated with parents, spectators and fans all getting involved.

"The player who started the incident has is known to junior league officials."

Police were called to the ground but by the time they arrived, many of those involved had scattered.

The ground manager is set to hand the NSWRL details of the incident in his report today.
