Mal Meninga is considering a shock return to club football to help rescue the struggling Gold Coast Titans.

Meninga has been asked to join his good mate, former Queensland State of Origin halfback Adrian Lam, in a bid to take over the Titans coaching job following the axing of Neil Henry this week.

Meninga, the Australian Test coach, would be bring great credibility to the battling Titans.

Under the plan, Lam would coach the team on a day to day basis, while Meninga would take on Football director role.

Meninga would still be able to coach the Kangaroos under the plan.

Lam is one of several applicants for the Titans job and he is close mates with Meninga.

The former Roosters halfback is Meninga’s right hand man with the Australian team and has extensive coaching experience in the lower grades.

He has served a good apprenticeship under the likes of Wayne Bennett, Trent Robinson and Meninga and is seen as a head coach in waiting.

Other applicants for the Titans job include the Walker brothers, Souths’ Michael Maguire and Queensland coach Kevin Walters.
