South Sydney legend Sam Burgess has missed a flight to Las Vegas with his Super League team over visa issues.

The NRL great's team Warrington flew out of England on Sunday, but the coach was not allowed on the plane.

He is hoping to have a US visa approved before the Wolves take on Wigan in Las Vegas on Sunday.

"It's been a bit of a process over the past couple of days," Burgess told BBC Radio Merseyside on Friday.

"My visa application is in now for review and it's been going on for a little while.

"I respect the process and everyone's efforts to get it to this point, but it's essentially out of my control so we'll see what the next 24 hours bring.

"I think I'll get there. I'm confident I'll get there. A lot of work has gone into it."

In 2021, Burgess pleaded guilty to three traffic offences but avoided conviction— instead ordered to complete a traffic offenders program.

Burgess reportedly dashed to London last week to have his visa urgently approved.

Several NRL players had to be interviewed by the US consulate before their visas were approved because of previous run-ins with the law.

Weeks out from last year's double header, there were concerns for the likes of South Sydney pair Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton as well as Brisbane's Reece Walsh as they faced scrutiny over their eligibility to travel to the US because of previous matters with law enforcement.

For this year's fixture, players from the Warriors, Cronulla and Canberra had to pay a visit to the US consulate, including Raiders trio Josh Papalii, Tom Starling and Joe Tapine.

It is expected that Burgess' assistant coaches Martin Gleeson and Richard Marshall will take charge if the Englishman's visa is not approved in time.
