'I'm just digging a hole here': Raw Walters interview shows just how deep Broncos' woes go

It's the hard-to-watch interview that will leave even the most hardened Broncos critic feeling for Kevin Walters.

After another devastating thrashing, this time a 46-point walloping at the hand of the Rabbitohs, the Queensland and Brisbane icon who bleeds maroon was brought to his knees.

Compounded by the added drama of Tevita Pangai Junior's impending exit from the club which was publicly confirmed by club CEO Dave Donaghy to Nine mid-game, Walters bravely faced up to put his best foot forward for the club he loves so dearly.

But in a raw and emotional interview, things went from bad to worse in what can only be viewed as a telling insight into how bad things really are at Red Hill.

Having fielded a swathe of questions around the handling of Pangai's situation, things took a turn for Walters when he was asked how he sees the rest of the season playing out.

"I still believe we can get something out of this year," Walters told Nine's Thursday Night Footy. "There's still 10 rounds left. We've got six or seven days off now and we'll get back Kotoni Staggs for next round.

"But my intention is to finish the season really strong and build into next season. That's where I am with things and the playing group will be the same.

"The time away (scheduled bye) is going to be good for everyone, I think. It's been a tough 15 weeks for everyone and a little bit of time away to regenerate, get back and come back and finish the season off as strongly as we can.

"Just get away from footy. It's been tough for everyone, the players, the coaching staff, everyone. It's been a disaster really. When you see a great club like the Broncos in this position it's pretty humbling, I can tell you.

"We're just leaking too many points. I thought our first 40 against Souths who are a pretty good side, and we lost a couple of key players in those defensive positions.

"So, we were 18-0 at half-time, doesn't sound great, but it was actually okay.

"Oh, not okay, but you know what I mean. I'm just digging a hole here so I'll let it go."

Walters quickly realised the grim subtext behind his words, throwing up his arms and muttering to himself as the interview spluttered to an end.

It's been a horror 18-months for the Broncos who have endured the scrutiny of the NRL off the back of last season's historic wooden spoon, messy Anthony Seibold fall-out and now Walters' struggling recovery mission.
