Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters brought the laughs to the stage of Cameron Smith’s representative footy retirement with a cheeky press conference stitch-up.

Fronting the media, Smith explained he felt at peace with the decision, prompting Walter’s to jump in on the unsuspecting former skipper.

“When I spoke to Kev about the decision, it was almost like a weight was off my shoulders,” Smith said.

“I’d now like to announce my retirement from rugby league.”

The quip had the media in hysterics as the long-time duo shared a smile with one another.

Smith announced his retirement from representative football effective immediately after capping 42 games for the Maroons and 56 Tests for the Kangaroos.

The shock move came less than two weeks before the Queensland and NSW teams are set to be announced for the opening game of the State of Origin series on June 6.
