Cowboys enforcer Josh McGuire could be set for a stint on the sideline after being placed on report for a coat-hanger style tackle on Knights prodigy Kalyn Ponga on Sunday evening.

Ponga was in the firing line late in the Knights' 12-0 victory over the Cowboys when he copped a heavy shot from Jake Granville seconds before McGuire came flying in with a high-hit.

Ponga immediately crumpled to the ground and looked momentarily unconscious with his head face-down on the turf. That invited an all-in between both teams as the Knights were handed a penalty.

"McGuire's lazy right arm just catches him around the neck," NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler said in commentary.

"Yeah, that's not good. It's a brave line [Ponga runs]. Right on the chin."

Nine caller Mat Thompson added: "That is an old fashioned coat-hanger."

Newcastle were able to advance off the back of the infringement, and it was Ponga that delivered a super cut-out pass to put Enari Tuala over in the corner to seal the win.

Following the match it was confirmed that McGuire was placed on report and will have his fate in the hands of the NRL judiciary should he choose to fight his charge come Tuesday night.
