Storm star Jahrome Hughes re-signs until 2024

Storm superstar Jahrome Hughes has ended speculation about his future, re-signing with the club until the end of 2024.

Hughes, 26, had been heavily linked with a return to his home country but knocked back the New Zealand Warriors to stay in Melbourne.

"Having Jahrome re-sign with us today is a real boost for Storm as we head into the new season," Storm General Manager of Football Frank Ponissi said.

"He came to us having played just four NRL games in two seasons, but he has worked extremely hard on his game, with the assistance of our coaching staff, and fully deserves the rewards which have come his way."

Hughes originally shone in the No.1 jersey after joining the Storm from North Queensland, but his first full season in the halves proved the ultimate success, helping steer the team to a title in 2020.

"His switch from fullback to halfback has proved to be an outstanding success and we expect there is still plenty of improvement ahead of him," Ponissi said.

"We have also included Jahrome in our Emerging Leadership group in the past two seasons which is another indication of how highly regarded he is here at Storm."

Hughes said in November that he didn't want to leave, but he understood that salary cap pressure may have been a factor - nevertheless, the differences were worked out and his long-term future secured.

It's understood seven clubs were interested in luring the Kiwi away from the club, particularly the Warriors.

The Courier Mail reports Hughes will pocket $2.1 million over three years to stay in Melbourne on $700,000-a-season.
