That’s true, except in the case of Batley Bulldogs fullback Shaun Ainscough, who single-handedly gifted an English Championship rival victory with a brain explosion of epic proportions after the fulltime siren.

Featherstone Rovers were trailing the Bulldogs 22-26 when they were forced to scramble a kick away from under the posts.

As Ainscough ran across to field the kick the fulltime siren sounded to all but guarantee the Bulldogs victory, provided the fullback merely kicked the ball out or took a tackle.

Bizarrely, he tried to kick the ball dead but miscued the attempt, resulting in a perfectly-placed ball for Featherstone’s winger to score a try.

The Rovers kicker slotted the sideline conversion to secure the dramatic 28-26 win, with all the fingers sure to be pointing at Ainscough in the Bulldogs dressing room.
