Injured Mason released by Catalans

The colourful and often controversial career of Willie Mason could be coming an end after the former NSW and Australia prop was released by Super League club Catalans.

Mason suffered a torn ligament and an avulsion fracture to his ankle that ended his season with the two parties agreeing to cancel the one-year contract he signed in February.

The outspoken forward, who played for Canterbury, Sydney Roosters, North Queensland, Newcastle and Manly, debuted for the Bulldogs 16 years ago and became one of the NRL's biggest characters following several off and on-field incidents throughout his career.

Dragons chief executive Christophe Jouffret said: "It is bad news to see Willie ruled out for the rest of the season with a bad injury.

"Willie had a fantastic career in the different clubs he played for and on the international stage with New South Wales, Tonga and Australia.

"He will remain among the great players who have worn the Catalans Dragons jersey. We would like to wish him all the best for the future."
