NRL superstar Greg Inglis has made a shock Father's Day admission, revealing he has a secret son, conceived before he married his wife Sally.

Inglis posted photos of his son, Riley, on Instagram and explained the youngster was conceived in 2009 when he and Sally had a break in their relationship.

The Souths captain kept Riley's existence a secret following the wishes of his mother, but with the youngster now at school the pair agreed to go public to show Riley "that I’m proud to call him my son".

“During a well publicised break in 2009 from my beautiful partner Sally, who is now my lovely wife, I briefly reconnected with my high school sweet heart (sic),” Inglis wrote.

“The result being this awesome and outgoing boy named Riley.

“His mother is a very private person, but now that he has started school, we need Riley to know that I’m proud to call him my son.”

Inglis, who is battling to recover from knee surgery in time for Souths' opening finals clash, has another son with Sally, named Nate, who was born last year.

In his Instagram post, the Kangaroos, Queensland and Rabbitohs star urged all fathers to embrace their role.

"I hope all you dads out there who read this and know they can do better, stand up and be the best father you can be to your child/children,” Inglis wrote.
