Former Great Britain skipper Garry Schofield has slammed both coaching icon Wayne Bennett and Canberra's favourite import Josh Hodgson.

Schofield, the most-capped Lions player of all time, has attacked the pair in the wake of last weekend's disastrous loss to Papua New Guinea, which came on top of a series loss to the Kiwis.

"When I'm looking at the quality of the British players, they are quality players. So why are they looking average, when they're not?" Schofield told England's Forty20Live podcast.

"Josh Hodgson is the second-best hooker in the world behind Cameron Smith. When he puts an international jumper on, he's garbage.

"He's garbage! He doesn't play anywhere near as well, and that's how he's told to play.

"The players are not being allowed to play as they want to play. (Bennett) has totally taken everything away from our players with boring, boring rugby league.

"How he was picking Hodgson above (Warrington's) Daryl Clark, I've no idea.

"Wayne shouldn't be anywhere near our national side. He should be sacked."
