Coyne quits as rugby league commissioner

Mark Coyne has quit his role as an Australian Rugby League Commissioner, saying he does not wish to be a burden on the sport.

The former St George Illawarra and Queensland star stood aside from his post last week after an incident in Singapore two months ago came to light.

He was arrested in Singapore after an expletive-laden rant towards police following an alleged altercation with a taxi driver and fined $4100.

After meeting ARLC chairman Peter Beattie on Saturday, Coyne was informed he didn't have the full support of the 16 NRL clubs.

"I have no wish for my role as a commissioner to be a burden on the commission or the game itself," Coyne said in a statement.

"Again, I regret deeply what happened in Singapore and my delayed reporting of it."

Coyne said he didn't intend to sever his ties with rugby league and would focus on coaching and developing junior players.

Beattie said he was happy Coyne would be remaining involved in the game and he admired the stance he'd taken.

"Mark has put the game ahead of his own interests and that shows a lot of character," Beattie told AAP.

"He's shown he's a really quality person with this decision."
