NRL contracts: David Klemmer's Bulldogs earnings revealed amid Knights interest
David Klemmer's earnings at the Bulldogs has been revealed, amid ongoing interest in the superstar prop from the Newcastle Knights.
Klemmer has reportedly been offered a $4.6 million deal to join the Knights, despite having two seasons remaining on his Canterbury deal. It has been speculated that Klemmer is unhappy with his salary at the Bulldogs.
However, Channel 9 NRL reporter Danny Weidler has revealed in his Sun HeraldSun Herald that Klemmer is far better paid than many believed, after a dramatic lift from $400,000 earnings in 2017.
"This is how his deal worked this year: standard contract $650,000; third-party arrangement $100,000. Then in 2019: standard payment $665,000; marquee payment $125,000; third-party arrangement $100,000. In 2020: contract $665,000; marquee payment $125,000; third-party deal $100,000," Weidler wrote.
"In other words, if his third-party deals fail to materialise, he will make $2.23 million from 2018 to 2020, and more than $2.5 million if his third-party contracts are honoured."
Weidler wrote that Klemmer was far from money-hungry and would hate people thinking that he was comparing his salary to teammates. Greg Eastwood lashed back at Daily Telegraph journalist Phil Rothfield after he reported that Klemmer was bemused by Eastwood's $800,000 back-ended salary for this season.

Rabbitohs hooker Damien Cook is taking a cautious approach to his planned contract extension with the club due to coaching uncertainty, the Daily Telegraph reports.
With current Rabbitohs mentor Anthony Seibold set to swap places with Broncos coach Wayne Bennett for 2020, but ongoing speculation the move may come next season, Cook's manager Mario Tartak said contract talks had been halted. Cook will reportedly seek an extension worth $800,000 a year, having become the NSW Origin and Test hooker in 2018.
"We are talking to Souths at the moment, but in saying that, with all this coaching merry-go-round we’ve taken a step back to see how it unfolds," Tartak said.
"Does he want to say at Souths? It’s probably the first time that Cookie can test the market as a player, so we’re not in a rush.
"We do have a few clubs inquiring."
