Man charged over NRL bottle throwing

A Canterbury fan has been charged by police over the ugly bottle throwing incident during the Bulldogs clash with Canberra on Monday night.

The glass bottle was launched toward the Raiders' bench after Bulldogs backrower Josh Jackson was sin-binned during the second half of Canberra's 22-8 victory at Belmore Oval.

The Wild Turkey bourbon bottle smashed on a bench, narrowly missing Canberra forward Frank-Paul Nuuasuala.

An investigation was immediately launched with police and NRL boss Todd Greenberg, who was at the ground, studying TV footage to try and identify the culprit.

Police have now charged a 39-year-old man with behaving in an offensive manner in a public place.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on April 27.

The alleged offender is now facing a lifetime ban from NRL matches.

The incident was the second time in two years a Bulldogs game has been marred by bottle throwing with fans pelting plastic bottles at officials following the fiery Good Friday clash between Canterbury and Souths at ANZ stadium last year.

Both the NRL and Bulldogs were quick to slam the behaviour on Monday night vowing life bans for the offender.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said he was happy with the way the incident was dealt with by the Bulldogs and police.

"The Bulldogs have dealt with it very professionally and very well," Stuart said.

"Canterbury is a great club and they jumped on it quickly and we don't want those unruly fans in our game."
