Broncos coach Kevin Walters has made his first big decision ahead of the 2022 NRL season, bringing in young gun Cory Paix to start at hooker over Jake Turpin.

After starting in the No.9 jersey during last week's 26-26 draw against the Titans, Turpin will shift to the bench in the Broncos' clash with the Cowboys, according to Nine's rugby league reporter Ben Dobbin.

Asked about the shake-up, Walters said the 22-year-old Paix impressed him during the pre-season.

"He was really good last week [off the interchange] and in the trial against Wynnum," Walters said.

"He's been rewarded for that more than anything else."

In other changes to the side, emerging star Selwyn Cobbo will take on the all-important fullback duties.

Walters' decision to give Cobbo a run in the No.1 jersey comes after Broncos pair David Mead and Jamayne Isaako shared the role in last week's trial match.

With star recruit and skipper Adam Reynolds being rested for Saturday's trial, Albert Kelly and Billy Walters will start in the halves, according to Dobbin.

Dobbin also said Walters, the son of the Broncos coach, is currently the frontrunner to partner with Reynolds come the start of the season.
