The Brisbane Broncos have been dealt a cruel blow with centre Kotoni Staggs likely to miss the remainder of the season.

Despite a starring performance last night during the Broncos' win against the Cowboys, in which he scored two tries and notched two line-breaks, Staggs re-injured the same knee that kept him out for nearly 12 months.

Playing in his fourth game back following an ACL injury, Staggs this time around suffered an MCL injury, which the club revealed is likely to end his season with five games remaining.

"Kotoni has a high-grade MCL injury after suffering an impact to the knee in a tackle in the second half, and he is unlikely to return to play for the remainder of the season," head of performance Dave Ballard said.

"It's the same knee that he injured last year but it's important to be clear that his ACL is fine and the injury is localised to his MCL.

"We expect it to be a straight-forward recovery over coming weeks and Kotoni is keen to get into his rehab as soon as he can."

Meanwhile, the club is hopeful Jake Turpin can return before the seasons' end despite suffering a high ankle sprain.

"Jake picked up a high ankle sprain which will mean a few weeks of rehab but he is a chance to play again this season," Ballard said.
