Brisbane Broncos will re-sign David Fifita, new report says, perhaps on short deal

Brisbane will re-sign teenage superstar David Fifita, perhaps on a short, bargain deal after rival clubs realised he was going nowhere.

That's according to a new Courier Mail report, which said that Wayne Bennett's South Sydney Rabbitohs had given up the chase for Fifita.

The Warriors, Eels and Bulldogs were also in the mix for Fifita, with $1 million per season deals touted.

"Brisbane were prepared to offer a monster five-year deal but with Sydney clubs going cold the Broncos could settle for a two-year package, with option clauses, worth around $750,000 a season," the Courier Mail reported.

The Broncos are now so confident of keeping Fifita, 19, that the deal may come together over the next few months, rather than being rushed through.

Souths, meanwhile, have signed Jai Arrow and Latrell Mitchell. Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett told the Courier Mail that his club could no longer afford to bid for Fifita, who is already a Queensland Origin player and Australian Nines representative.

Fifita found himself under arrest in Bali last year, amid a post-season trip gone wrong. The Broncos helped broker his release, earning them further credit with the teen star and his influential mother, Gwen.
