Kevin Walters is waiting for a call from Cameron Smith, hoping the future Immortal will shelve retirement for a Broncos swansong.

Walters believes Brisbane are still a chance to sign Smith this season despite the former Storm captain staying mum on his 2021 plans.

"We just don't know. It's a mystery so we'll stay in the hunt," Walters told Nine News.

Now living on the Gold Coast, Smith was an interested onlooker at the Titans pre-season trial in Burleigh on Friday night, but Walters would love the 37-year-old to pull on the boots for one more season up the highway.

Smith told a packed luncheon on the Sunshine Coast on Friday that he \ but at this stage Walters and the Broncos are as much in the dark as the rest of the competition.

"We're none the wiser so we'll just sit back and wait and watch it all unfold. That's all we can do," Walters said.

"I think every club would love to have him on their books. For all we know he could be running out for the Storm yet."

No one from the Broncos has spoken to Smith about joining the club, but Walters doesn't believe they need to pick up the phone.

"I think he'd probably be aware that we're interested."
