Newcastle's Aidan Guerra has been stretchered from the field with a suspected broken ankle following a gruesome accident late in his side's clash against Manly.

The Knights had mounted a brave comeback, threatening to catch the Sea Eagles in the dying moment of Saturday night's fixture at McDonald Jones Stadium, when Guerra innocuously went down.

Play continued as he lay on the turf wincing, and upon replay the source of Guerra's pain soon became apparent.

Attempting to make a tackle while changing direction, the forward's ankle folded under him seemingly snapping backwards as it rag dolled in the air.

Trainers immediately tended to 31-year-old who was promptly escorted from field in the Medicab.

Manly managed to see off the Knights' comeback to bag their third consecutive win 26-18.
