A Dallas Cowboys NFL player who is on a $US2.3 million ($A2.49 million) contract has been arrested for shoplifting "a bottle of cologne and some underwear."

Police in Dillard, Texas say 22-year-old Joseph Randle was caught stealing by video surveillance.

The Cowboys have not commented on the incident, nor has Randle or his agents.

Randle, who joined the Cowboys as a fifth-round pick in 2013 out of Oklahoma State, signed a four-year, $2.3 million rookie contract, including a $188,820 signing bonus. His base salary this season is $US495,000 ($A535,569).

Randle was transported to the city jail and was released after posting bail.

The arrest came one day after Randle enjoyed a breakout game in the Cowboys' 30-23 victory against the Seattle Seahawks.

The team recently instituted a zero tolerance policy regarding charges and arrests for crimes, including domestic violence.

It comes on top of a horror season for the NFL, with players arrested and charged over crimes including domestic violence and using excessive violence when disciplining their children.
