NFL star signs eye-watering extension worth $721m months after ACL
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has signed a contract extension through to the end of 2033, worth a whopping $721m.
That means he will be earning $90m per season and $5.2m per game played.

Mahomes in 2020 signed a 10-year extension worth $450m, but that has been restructured to make him, by an even larger margin, the highest paid player in NFL history.
Quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence sit the next highest in the NFL with $393m extensions signed in 2024. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had surpassed Mahomes in terms of average annual contract value at $86m over four years, but Mahomes has now reclaimed that crown.
Mahomes' deal makes him the highest paid athlete in the world, of sports with a salary cap.
Juan Soto of the New York Mets still sits on top with his 15-year extension signed in 2025 worth a little over $1b. However, the MLB has no salary cap.
Mahomes now sits sixth all-time for largest ever sporting contract, behind baseball players Soto and Shohei Ohtani, and football players Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo sits second and fifth on the list, thanks to his two deals with team Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Mahomes, 30, has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories and is a two-time league MVP. He will be 38 when this contract comes to its end.
However, towards the end of the 2025 season he ruptured his ACL, which saw Kansas City miss the playoffs for the first time since he was drafted. They were looking likely to miss before the injury, however.
He is expected to be ready to go for the start of the 2026-2027 season, which will get underway in September.
“Over the last decade Patrick has become one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all time,” Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt told ESPN on Thursday.
“He has helped lead our franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships; he has been instrumental in shaping the Chiefs brand and putting Kansas City on the world stage.
“On top of it all he has been an outstanding role model in the community.
“Patrick is a generational talent and an elite human being, and I’m so excited he will continue to lead our team into the future.”
