Swifts battler proud of netballers

NSW Swifts battler Lauren Moore is proud of how netballers have copped a huge pay cut without whingeing and says they play for love of the game

The Super Netball players have started a three-week period on a 70 per cent reduction in wages, following two weeks leave from all club duties from March 30.

The Super Netball season was due to start on May 2, but has been postponed until at least June 30, with a review of that date to be completed by late May.

"Our base salary is only 30 grand so we're only getting 30 per cent of that for the next three weeks then we're unsure of what the payment will be after," Moore told AAP.

"We may be eligible for JobKeeper, so we are holding out for that. Fingers crossed that will come though. That will be a great help

"But I'm really proud of how netball has handled the situation, just doing the right thing straight away without any complaints.

"I think it just comes down to the fact that if there's no players there's no game and we play because we love the game, so that's the most important thing.

"Hopefully we come out bigger and better on the other side of this."

Moore, who missed the Swifts' successful 2019 finals campaign, due to a shoulder reconstruction, has returned home from Sydney to the Central Coast, after copping another financial hit.

"I also had a second job in retail which unfortunately I can't work at the minute. They were really good about it and I completely understand," 23-year-old Moore said.

"I'm very fortunate to be able to come home, my parents can support me again but netball has been hit really hard.

"We're just trying to do everything we can to keep it afloat."

At a time when she could be forgiven for concentrating on her own difficult financial situation, Moore has raised over $10,000 for The Kids' Cancer Project and will have her head shaved on Friday week.

NSW and Australian age group representative Moore is no stranger to adversity having required a reconstruction on a different shoulder in 2018 and 2019.

"I've had quite a few bumps in the road," she said.

"But 2020 is hopefully my year."
