Super netball Swifts too strong for Fever

The World Cup-enforced Super Netball break has not knocked the competition leaders off their stride with the NSW Swifts comfortable winners over the West Coast Fever.

NSW consolidated their place atop the table with a 53-49 win over the struggling Fever in Perth on Saturday, as Australian internationals Paige Hadley and Sarah Klau gained some consolation after the World Cup defeat to New Zealand in England last weekend.

Midcourter Hadley was prominent before the Swifts recorded their eighth win from 10 games while coach Briony Akle also made an astute switch in the shooting circle when she replaced Sam Wallace (24/29) with Sophie Garbin (7/8) in the final quarter.

Goal attack Helen Housby (22/28) also weighed in as the Swifts negated another prolific outing from Jhaniele Fowler (43/47).

The Jamaican international fought a lone hand with goal attack Alice Teague-Neeld (6/12) enduring a tough outing pockmarked by 10 turnovers.

Akle was understandably proud of her team given the World Cup contingent had not trained with the squad since returning from Liverpool.

"I think the outcome was always going to be very unpredictable for us not having had a training session together," she said.

"Credit to Fever, we knew it would take 60 minutes to get there in the end and it really did. Paige has tears of exhaustion now I think but we survived it."

Akle's counterpart Stacey Marinkovich again lamented an inconsistent effort that left last season's runners-up eight point outside the top four.

"We did come out of the blocks hard and I thought the way we were playing and moving the ball had shown improvement," she said.

"But again it's in key moments ... making the most of our opportunity when we do get ball that still eludes us at the moment."
