Super Netball comp down to the wire

West Coast Fever and Giants Netball will meet to decide the Super Netball minor premiership as the national competition's regular season heads towards a thrilling conclusion.

With one point separating the Fever (70) and Giants (69) on the ladder, the two sides will clash in Sydney on Saturday night, with the winner claiming top spot and home-court advantage for the major semi-final.

While the Fever and Giants have qualified for the semi-finals with one round to play, big wins to the Sunshine Coast Lightning (63) and Queensland Firebirds (62) helped the Queensland-based clubs leap ahead of the Melbourne Vixens (57) into the top four.

Back-to-back wins in Melbourne have secured the Giants' place in the play-offs as they aim to go one better than last season's grand final defeat to the Lightning.

"It's where we always wanted to be, that the fate of it all would be in our own hands," Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald said after her side locked in a finals berth following Sunday's 66-56 win over Collingwood.

But the Giants know they are in for a battle if they hope to take the minor premiership from the Fever, who are coming off an impressive 13-goal home win over the Vixens.

"We know what a mammoth task that is going to be, they're such an impressive side," Fitzgerald said about Saturday's clash with the ladder leaders.

"They are so hard to stop and it's so hard to get ball off them but we are certainly up to the challenge."

The Firebirds gained seven competition points in Sunday's 67-46 drubbing of the Adelaide Thunderbirds while the Lightning claimed all eight points in Saturday's 61-51 win over the NSW Swifts.

The Firebirds can clinch a top-four spot with a win against the Magpies on Saturday, while the fifth-placed Vixens must defeat the Lightning in Sunday afternoon's final match at Hisense Arena in order to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Vixens will be sweating on the fitness of shooter Mwai Kumwenda after the Malawian international suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of Saturday's loss to the Fever.

Super Netball's new bonus point system will also play a part in determining the make-up of the top four, with the Vixens needing to close a six-point gap on the defending champions in order to finish above them.

The Vixens (8-5) have the better win-loss record but the Lightning (7-5 with one draw) may advance ahead of them having tallied eight more bonus points during the season.
