NZ netball coach Southby resigns

New Zealand netball coach Janine Southby has resigned after a damning review of their Commonwealth Games failure.

Southby ended a two-year reign that oversaw a plunge in fortunes for the Silver Ferns, who failed to win a Games medal for the first time three months ago on the Gold Coast.

They have won just six of their past 18 games, including 11 successive defeats against tier-one nations.

Southby defended her record during a difficult period.

"We were at a real point of transition when I was appointed and I believed it would take time to make the necessary change," she said.

"Over the last two years I have worked hard to develop a high-performance culture based on accountability and self-responsibility.

"I felt we were making steps in the right direction. However, I have to acknowledge this hasn't happened as quickly or as well as I would have liked."

The search for a replacement will begin immediately, with a Silver Ferns squad to be named on August 14.

They will contest the Quad Series, involving Australia, in September.

The independent review recommended a strong and experienced coaching team as well as improvements in areas such as campaign planning and communication.
