NSW Swifts in thrilling netball win over GWS Giants

A defiant final quarter from the NSW Swifts has earned them a first Sydney derby victory, besting the Giants 55-54 in Super Netball.

The Giants were in control for the vast majority of proceedings, with the Swifts leading just once until the final quarter.

While the Giants were as many as five goals ahead at multiple stages, the momentum shifted halfway through the closing period - the physical brand of netball on show from the Swifts perhaps taking its toll.

There was no love lost between former teammates - now opposing captains - Swifts wing defence Abbey McCulloch and Giants wing attack Kim Green, who led the way in the physicality stakes at Qudos Bank Arena.

Swifts goal shooter Sophie Garbin replaced Sam Wallace (15/18) at halftime, with the home side using her height and ability in the air successfully.

Swifts coach Briony Akle heralded the late charge.

"For me, to be able to finish and win by one is amazing. It's just a relief that all the work we've done is paying off," she said.

"We've put a big focus on actually believing that we can win and the belief was shown."

Garbin finished with 17 goals from 18 attempts.

The Giants come away with a single bonus point for their troubles after taking out the second quarter following a draw in the first.

The Swifts earned an extra two points on top of the four for the win after taking out the third and fourth quarters.

Jo Harten was strong at the top for the Giants, posting 38 goals from 41 before showing visible frustration at a number of umpiring decisions.

Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald singled Harten out for praise but reflected on lost chances to close the derby out.

"It was a really good game and I think we had opportunities to win it - but we didn't take them in that last quarter," Fitzgerald said.

"We just didn't win enough possession back and when we did we only scored from one of (those turnovers).

"That really tells the story of the last quarter."
