Netball: Liz Ellis claims key to shutting down Jhaniele Fowler lies in mid-court

Australian netball legend Liz Ellis claims the secret to negating Jamaican scoring sensation Jhaniele Fowler is to shut down the mid-court.

Fowler has been running riot since the beginning of the 2018 Super Netball season scoring a staggering career high 66-points in her first game for West Coast Fever, and following up that performance with a further 61-points the next week.

However, despite her offensive prowess Ellis is adamant that Fowler can be negated by cutting of her supply.

“The game plan can’t be around shutting her down. You have to shut the midcourt down,” Ellis told supernetball.com.au.

“The Fever midcourt is playing really well, playing with such confidence. It would take a really big effort to shut them down.

“But you have to starve Jhaniele of supply.”

Two emphatic wins for the Fever have rocketed them to the top of the Super Netball ladder and while Ellis didn’t shy away from shining praise upon the Carribean import’s role in getting there she said she was eager to see other facets of her game develop.

“The fact that the Fever have got such a huge target makes things easier. You don’t have to be perfect, the passes just have to be in the same postcode,” Ellis said.

“Jhaniele has a huge reach and a great split.

“I hope to see her develop her game more … I would love to see some movement,” she said.

“I am less excited about seeing the high ball go into Jhaniele and more excited about what her game can become.”
