Giants and Sunshine Coast Lightning poised for Suncorp Super Netball scrap

Everything points towards a thriller when the Giants and Sunshine Coast Lightning meet in a Super Netball winner takes-all finals match for the second year running.

In 2017, the fledgling franchises clashed in the competition's inaugural grand final.

This year, they meet a week earlier in the preliminary final, in Sydney on Sunday.

While Lightning won the home 2017 grand final against the Giants by 17 goals, their four regular season clashes over the past two years have all been nailbiters.

Last year, each team won by one goal on the other's home court.

This year produced two more thrillers, with the Giants winning at home by three and the clubs slugging out a draw in the return clash.

Lightning shaded state rivals Queensland Firebirds by one goal in last week's minor semi-final in Brisbane.

"They are not a team to be underestimated and they clearly know how to play pressure games, the weekend showed that,"' Giants' English midcourt star Serena Guthrie told AAP.

"We've definitely got a challenge on our hands.

"They've got strength all over the court and it's going to have to be a whole team performance if we're going to beat them on the weekend."

The two teams are squaring off for the right to face West Coast Fever in Perth in the grand final on August 26, after they toppled the Giants 63-57 in Sydney last Saturday.

It was the second-straight year the minor premiers had lost a home major semi-final.

The Giants want to avoid the same fate as the Melbourne Vixens, who lost successive home finals in 2017 and failed to make the season decider.

"We're aware of where we fell down last week as a team and we've spoken and discussed that, now it's about moving on and not worrying too much about the past," Guthrie said.

Guthrie on Tuesday revealed she wouldn't be returning to the Giants for a third season.

She said winning the Super Netball title would mean everything to her and would cap off a wonderful year.

"I've had such an incredible time here at the Giants and also this year with the Commonwealth Games and being successful (with England) there," she said.

"To get a championship ... would be just incredible."
