Firebirds look ahead after win over Coast

The Queensland Firebirds believe they now have some momentum and are looking to create their second consecutive upset next week when they begin a tricky month of Super Netball.

The Firebirds bounced back from last week's season-opening big loss to West Coast by scoring a thrilling 55-52 win over premiers Sunshine Coast in Brisbane on Sunday.

Now they face many of the competition's top teams in short order.

It begins with an away meeting against the Melbourne Vixens, who are undefeated after early-season wins over Collingwood and NSW Swifts, on Saturday.

The Firebirds then play the Giants, West Coast again and Collingwood in the next three rounds.

It is a tough draw, but one that the side aren't shying away from.

The Firebirds just missed the finals last year and aspire to be among the season-ending action this year.

"We want to be contenders and we are contenders," wing defence Gabrielle Simpson said.

"We have three of the four top teams from last year (coming up), so we really wanted to stamp our authority on the competition (on Sunday) and show this competition that we are not willing to just step back like we did last year."

Australian skipper Laura Geitz missed Sunday's match for the Firebirds, and it is unclear when she will return.
