Fever keen to rectify bonus points pests

West Coast Fever have rediscovered their winning mojo, but they won't be satisfied until they start adding some bonus points to the mix.

Last year's grand finalists found themselves stuck on the bottom of the ladder after opening the Super Netball season with three straight losses.

A fighting draw against the powerful Vixens and a brave 63-61 away win over Collingwood have since revived Fever's finals hopes.

But their lack of bonus points remains a concern.

Teams are awarded a bonus point for each quarter they have won.

Fever have snared just five bonus points from five games this season.

In contrast, the NSW Swifts have already tallied 16, Sunshine Coast and Vixens have registered 12 apiece, and the Magpies have 11 to their name.

West Coast are currently 10 points adrift of the fourth-placed Magpies.

Fever centre Verity Charles said the team was determined to add more bonus points, starting with Saturday night's away clash with the last-placed Queensland Firebirds.

"Definitely the win is the main thing," Charles said.

"But these bonus points are little pests. You've got to pull them in. This competition is so tight, they have to be a focus, and they definitely are at Fever.

"If you look back at some of the teams last year who made finals, they scraped in by their bonus points. So it can be a game changer.

"We've really got to fight and hunt down those last five minutes of a quarter and finish off to grab them, because we need every one we can get at the moment."

Charles was proud of the way the team had fought through adversity in recent weeks, and believes there is still plenty of room for improvement.

"The training has been intense, and everyone has been pushing the limits," Charles said.

"So the win was almost bound to happen. Our work rate has been insane lately. To finally see that pay off was so nice."

The Firebirds are winless after five rounds, with only one draw to show for their troubles.

But Charles said the Fever would be on guard against last year's semi-finalists.

"I think they might have been a little bit like us - taking some time to come out and stir up a little bit," Charles said.

"You can't rule out a team like that.

"Their culture is so rich and they've had such a winning history. I think they will come back fighting."
