Dumping Kiwi teams to boost Test netball

Trans-Tasman Tests will rise to new heights in the Super Netball era, Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander says.

The best players from Australia and New Zealand got used to playing against each other regularly in the now-defunct ANZ Championship, which ran for nine years.

But with the two superpowers again going their own way at the elite domestic level, the sport's greatest rivalry will revert to only taking place in the Test arena.

In the remainder of 2017, that will happen in the return leg of the Quad Series and the prestigious Constellation Cup.

Alexander says a lack of match-play against the New Zealand style will add to the challenge of Test preparation.

"What happened during ANZ time was that we got used to playing against their style and they got used to playing against our style," Alexander told AAP.

"It's going to make for those Test matches that we have in the Constellation Cup, we're all going to look forward to (even more). Both countries will.

"It's hard to prepare against that style when you don't have it in your own country so you have to simulate it as best you can

"We will need to have some sort of practice runs against that style and we'll need to think about how we're going to do that.

"Thankfully we have the Quad Series before the main event so that will be important.

"That's what Test matches are all about, that ability to test each other."

Alexander also predicts absence will make the heart grow fonder when it comes to the hype around the Tests.

"It's not ho-hum that we're up against each other and you're not going to see it through the year," she said.

"The Tests are going to be your opportunity to see it so hopefully we will have lots of sell-out crowds."
