Diamonds loss creates World Cup dilemma

They won the Quad Series but another loss to England has thrown doubt over the composition of Australia's World Cup squad makeup, most notably in the midcourt.

Coach Lisa Alexander admits she has selection issues and will probably make changes after the Diamonds fell to the Roses in a big game for the second time in the space of nine months.

The 52-49 loss in London on Monday (AEDT) featured a core of the same players involved in the 52-51 gold medal match defeat at the Commonwealth Games last April.

Australia were missing key trio Caitlin Bassett, Gabi Simpson and Courtney Bruce - all injured at various stages of the Quad Series - but Alexander brushed aside excuses.

She said there were shortcomings on show that, if not addressed, could prove crippling in the Diamonds' bid for a fourth successive world title in July.

"The girls know this is all part of World Cup selection so they're disappointed," Alexander told AAP.

"We've got a very strong squad but I think there probably will be changes.

"I think the athletes know they're all accountable.

"We've been tested and we've come up short so we've got to have a real look at that.

"The selectors and I will have a real discussion about the whole thing."

Alexander wouldn't reveal her chief concerns after a tournament which Australia won on goal differential, courtesy of England's shock loss to South Africa.

It's difficult to foresee changes to her shooting and defensive groups, where the respective returns of Bassett and Bruce will be an enormous boost.

Alexander took five midcourters to the Quad Series with at least one to be shed for the World Cup.

Kim Ravaillion, the starting centre when Australia clinched the 2015 world title in Sydney, is available for the showpiece tournament in Liverpool, England, and Alexander said the 25-year-old will be part of national team camp in March.

It puts pressure on midcourt newcomers Kate Moloney and Jamie-Lee Price to retain their berths, although Alexander singled them out as two of her better-performed players at the Quad Series.

A World Cup squad will be unveiled in May, allowing only a small window for candidates to impress in Super Netball, which starts in late April.
