Diamonds coach honours netball retirements

Australian coach Lisa Alexander wants to honour the careers of three retiring Diamonds greats rather than buy into speculation about why the trio have called it quits.

Former national captain Liz Ellis has suggested Laura Geitz and Madi Robinson announcing their international retirements within a day of each other was no coincidence.

In a column for Fairfax Media, Ellis wrote that Geitz and Robinson could have been told they weren't in Australia's plans for the upcoming Quad Series and were instead given the opportunity to bow out on their terms.

Giants shooter Susan Pettitt, who played in the Diamonds' 2007 World Championship win, joined Geitz and Robinson in retiring on Thursday.

Alexander says it's important to celebrate their careers, rather than speculate on the reasons why they have retired.

"That is her (Ellis's says ) take on a certain thing and my discussions with Diamonds are private and I certainly don't want to get into that at all," Alexander told AAP.

"What's more important is we celebrate the great careers of those three players from this point on.

"People are making decisions all the time about their lives and obviously this is the right time for them.

"It's a great thing for those three players to have their chance to announce their retirements and get lots of love and lots of great accolades for what have been magnificent careers.

"I don't particularly like having as much experience walk out the door at the one time but that's sometimes just the way it is."

With the squad for the September series against New Zealand, England and South Africa to be announced on Channel Nine on Sunday, Alexander believes the Diamonds are well placed.

Australia are looking ahead with one eye on next year's World Cup after their shock loss to England at the Commonwealth Games.

Despite the experience and leadership hole that the retiring trio leave, young players won't be rushed into the national team before they are ready.

"At the Diamonds level, you don't get an opportunity to just put young people in without having some good experience and for the selectors to think that people are ready," Alexander said.

"Athletes that come into the Diamonds have to earn it, they have to show in Super Netball that they've earned it.

"We always have to have our mind on the future so we're ready and so we can replace what looks to be irreplaceable people in Susan, Madi and Laura with the next crop of Diamonds."
