Jamie Whincup’s poor run of luck at Mount Panorama has continued when a wheel fell off his #1 Red Bull Holden early in the race.

Whincup’s co-driver Paul Dumbrell was driving at the time and was in second position to Luke Youlden of Eerebus Holden when things went pear-shaped on lap 40.

The right-front wheel parted flew from underneath the car approaching Turn 1, forcing Dumbrell to get around on three wheels before pitting.

They saved a trip to the garage, with the team completing making some running changes before sending Dumbrell back out into the action.

It was a bit of a let down for Whincup and Dumbrell after entering the race as favourites, having dominated the Sandown 500 last month and qualified second.
