The evolution of the pit stop

Formula One's obsession with pushing the boundaries of speed isn't solely confined to building some of the world's fastest cars.

It's also evident in the evolution of the pit stop.

Once upon a time the job was an arduous task that took over a minute, but modern day crews have perfected these crucial moments into a 'blink and you'll miss it' art form.

And a new video has shown just how fast modern day mechanics are at their craft.

Comparing a Bill Holland pit stop form the 1950 Indianapolis 500, the first year of official competition, and a Ferrari stop during the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, the Maranello team blitzed their mechanical fore fathers with a time just under two seconds.

Holland's team, consisting of just four crew members, one of which changed both front tyres, took 67 seconds to get their driver back out into the race.

Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull team hold the record for the fastest pit stop after taking just 1.923 seconds to work on Mark Webber's car at the United Sates Grand Prix in 2013.
