Johann Zarco escapes serious injury following horrifying MotoGP collision

French racer Johann Zarco appears to have avoided serious injury after he was floored by a rival's bike in a freak accident during the MotoGP season finale in Valencia.

The Frenchman lost control at the Turn 6 Angel Nieto corner and ended up in the gravel on Lap 14 of the 27-lap race.

The incident occurred only seconds after ninth-placed Danilo Petrucci fell at the same corner.

But as Zarco pulled himself up off the gravel and gingerly walked to safety with his back to the circuity, 15th-placed Iker Lecuona would lose control sending his KTM flying and taking out the legs of the Frenchman in a freakish collision.

Video footage of the incident showed Zarco being flipped in the air and landing on the back of his neck.

The freakish collision called for the stretcher with the Frenchman being carried away as thousands of fans watched on in horror.

Fortunately, it appears Zarco has escaped any major injury with the likelihood of some ligament damage being the worst of the situation.

"I saw Petrucci crash. Immediately I thought, 'keep the pace and maybe you can catch Valentino'. But just a few seconds after I was also crashing," Zarco said.

"It was not exactly the same place as Petrucci, but I also lost the front, so maybe I lost a little bit of focus in that moment or maybe the conditions were a bit difficult."

"It was a really hard shock and immediately my left ankle felt strange. I could not move it and the way his bike hit me, I was sure something was broken.

"Now it looks like the bones are all okay. Nothing broken. But the ligaments are maybe not good. I will have an MRI scan tomorrow I think."
