'I'm not an expert but I think he's upset': Aussie questions team strategy in fiery race rant

Will Power unleashed an expletive-laden rant on his team radio before having to settle for fifth place at IndyCar's Alabama Grand Prix on Monday (AEST).

It was the consistent Australian's fifth straight top five finish at Barber Motorsport Park but he was eager to get on a podium that was eventually filled by winner Alex Palou of Spain, Denmark's Christian Lundgaard and New Zealand's Scott McLaughlin.

Power's blood boiled while trying to make a move on Penske teammate McLaughlin as he questioned his support crew's strategy.

"If that was me I would have tried to pass the guy instead of saving fuel," Power fumed.

"(Bleep), why didn't you tell me the (bleep) was still going?"

Commentator Townsend Bell helped translate.

"He's fired up, Will Power. I'm not an expert but I think he's upset," Bell deadpanned.

"I think what he was saying was 'why were you telling me to save fuel? I could have passed McLaughlin.' So maybe they gave him a fuel number and now he's realised he didn't need to save any gas. If it's a three (pit) stopper you shouldn't have to."

Power shed further light on the situation after he had cooled down slightly in pit lane.

"That was just... we saved fuel, we maybe could have gone a lap longer," the 44-year-old from Toowoomba explained.

"It was nothing to do with the team, it was just me, more to do with the situation on the track. We thought we should have tried to cover (Rinus) VeeKay and it was a bit of hard racing there."

Power is ninth in the championship standings as Palou opens up a big lead in his quest for a third straight title.

"It was still a good day," Power said.

"It was just really difficult for the guys with the strategy. You had Lundgaard who undercut but we could have overcut and got a couple of people but it was just difficult decisions. Still a solid day."

The drivers now turn their attention to the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on Sunday (AEST).
