Porsche have tested their new hybrid sports car on an unrestricted stretch of the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, clocking a top speed of 350km/h.

The 918 Spyder, which costs $900,000, was driven by professional race car driver Craig Baird. The test was carried out just north of Alice Springs and saw the Kiwi driver hit the throttle after exiting a 60km/h zone.Within 40 seconds the Porsche had reached 350km/h, with its twin electric motors and eight cylinders - revving at almost 9000 rpm - combining to produce a staggering 652kW.Porsche used spotters to ensure the road was completely empty for embarking on the promotional test, which is part of their push to promote the German marque’s hybrid technology.
