Formula 3 driver survives wild ride

A Formula 3 driver has survived a terrifying wild ride after his speeding car hurtled through the air and crashed heavily into the barriers at Italy's famous Monza circuit.

Canadian driver Lance Stroll was lucky to walk away unscathed from the smoking wreckage of his car after making contact with rival Antonio Giovinazzi in a battle for fifth spot.

Heading into Curve Grande on the fourth lap, Giovinazzi clips the back of Strolls' car, flipping the Prema Powerteam on its side and flying off the road.

The vehicle completes a somersault, bounces off the turf surrounding the circuit, tumbles three times through the air and smashes heavily with the wall.

The car launches into the air, spins around and comes to rest in a gravel pit.

Later, marshalls and medical staff were quickly on the scene with Stroll waving them away when asked if he was okay.

Stroll's spectacular crash wasn't the only accident to mar the round's triple-header with Michele Beretta's car also sent tumbling across the turf after locking wheels with another car just a few laps later.
