Oscar Piastri at early disadvantage, forced to miss crucial Abu Dhabi practice to fulfil rookie mandate

Oscar Piastri is already at a championship disadvantage, with the Aussie set to miss crucial practice time in the lead-up to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Ahead of last month's Las Vegas Grand Prix, McLaren made the call on which session Piastri would sit out to fulfil the team's mandatory rookie practice requirement before the end of the season.
With options exhausted, Piastri will give up his seat for the first free practice session (FP1) in Abu Dhabi.

The championship fight has reached its climax, and the title winner will be crowned after 58 laps of action at the Yas Marina Circuit on Monday morning (AEDT).
The Melburnian's McLaren teammate Lando Norris leads the standings with 408 points, followed closely by Red Bull rival Max Verstappen (396) and Piastri (392).
Piastri faces the toughest challenge among the three contenders and must finish either first or second in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to have any mathematical chance of winning the 2025 drivers' championship.
To help new talent gain track experience, Formula 1's regulations mandate that every team must field a rookie driver (someone with two or fewer Grand Prix starts) in two FP1 sessions for each of their cars during the season.
With one grand prix remaining, Piastri has only yielded his car once, having sat out FP1 at the Italian Grand Prix.
McLaren chose to run Piastri in the first practice session in Las Vegas. Then, because the following Qatar Grand Prix was a sprint weekend — featuring only one practice session — the team's only remaining opportunity to satisfy the rookie takeover requirement is the Abu Dhabi season finale.

As Piastri needs a monumental effort to leapfrog Norris and Verstappen for his maiden drivers' championship, missing a practice session is far from ideal.
The free practice sessions allow teams and drivers to collect crucial data and optimise their car's setup for the unique conditions of that specific circuit before qualifying and the grand prix.
Therefore, while Piastri watches from the pit wall as likely rookie Pato O'Ward completes laps of the Yas Marina Circuit in his McLaren, Norris and Verstappen will have a valuable extra hour on track.
All other drivers have satisfied their team's obligation.
