Drivers walk away after spectacular GT4 crash

Two race drivers were lucky to walk away unscathed after their cars spectacularly crashed into a wall and flipped in a GT4 European Series championship race at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

Battling each other to the chequered flag, Aston Martin driver Jorg Viebahn and Rosen Daslakov slid off the track when their cars clipped as they jockeyed for position on a bend.

The contact sent both cars sliding into a barrier nose-first at over 200km/h and then flipping into the air.

Viebahn's Aston Martin was catapulted at least 3m high with the impact sending one of his tyres hurtling, while Daskalov's yellow Sin R1 GT4 also launched skywards, landing on its roof, before bouncing onto its tyres.

Amazingly, both drivers managed to escape their wreckage unaided and walked away unscathed.

The circuit has seen its share of horror accidents over the past 40 years with American driver Mark Donohue losing his life in an accident during a Formula One race in 1975.
