Distressing footage has emerged of the moment a car left the road and ran into spectators ahead of the Dakar Rally on Saturday, leaving ten injured.

The footage shows the Mini driven by Chinese driver Guo Meiling lose control after hitting a bump on a straight dirt road in Argentina.

The car couldn't slow down fast enough as it careened through the corner of a field, through a marquee and into two parked vehicles.

The crowd screamed and scattered but at least ten people were hurt in the crash, five seriously.

A father and his 14-year-old son were the most seriously injured.

"In total, we had 10 patients, including four children and one pregnant woman, who is okay," local hospital head Daniel Modesto said.

The opening stage of the Rally was postponed due to bad weather but has since begun, with Australian motorcyclist Toby Price currently in the lead.
