Ford Mustang out of Bathurst 12 Hour after 250km/h collision with kangaroo

Ford's solo Mustang entry has been knocked out of the Bathurst 12 Hour after a violent high-speed collision with a kangaroo at Mount Panorama.

The race's first safety car was triggered inside the first 20 minutes of Sunday's event when German driver Christopher Mies hit the animal at full tilt.

The Haupt Racing Team Mustang ground to a halt on the left side of Conrod Straight only three laps after the green flag.

The impact was reportedly so severe that the car's suspension fully compressed, causing it to bottom out instantly. The kangaroo did not survive.

Mies scrambled from the cockpit, visibly shaken, signalling urgently for medical assistance while covered in debris and blood.

The kangaroo was forced into the driver's compartment upon impact, striking Mies. This caused significant damage to the front-left corner of the car and the windscreen.

While the former winner was physically unharmed, the car suffered terminal damage. He had been running inside the top 10.

"Unfortunately, we had an animal on track and hit it at 250km/h," Mies' co-driver Dennis Olsen said.

"Luckily, Mies is okay. We can see that he was for sure impacted by that. I'm glad he's okay, that's the main thing.

"Very unfortunate that we cannot show the performance of our car here.

"What to say? We have to come back next year and try to win."

Olsen confirmed the team aims to return to the grid in 2027.

The driver lineup included Supercars star Broc Feeney.

Racing finally resumed on lap 12 after a 30-minute safety car period.

Earlier, the BMW Art Car entry also clipped a kangaroo but was able to continue largely unscathed.
