Ambrose won't make V8s future call yet

Former V8 Supercars champion Marcos Ambrose says he won't make an announcement on his racing future at this weekend's Gold Coast 600.

The two-time champion is taking part in what could possibly be his last appearance behind the wheel on the streets of Surfers Paradise, after stepping away from a full-time drive with Dick Johnson Racing Team Penske earlier this year.

The Tasmanian is almost certain to be named as one of DJR Team Penske's co-drivers for next year's endurance races, but says he won't be making any formal calls this weekend.

"I have said for many months that I would get to the end of the endurance series and assess what I wanted to do in the future," he said.

"I am stepping away from full time driving, but not necessarily hanging up the helmet."

Ambrose's much-heralded return to V8s after 10 years racing in the United States with NASCAR failed to match the hype.

The 39-year-old only competed in one championship event as a full-time driver, returning later in the year for the endurance races at Sandown, Bathurst and Surfers Paradise.

He says there is still a passion to race despite his decision to walk away from a full-time role.

"I am really enjoying the family life back in Tasmania and having time with Sonja and the kids," Ambrose said.

"But I am also a racer and love racing cars. So now it is time to step back and see what the future holds.

"DJR Team Penske has made some real gains this year and I understand that there is a co-drive with the team should we go that way."
