Alonso returns to the winner's circle

Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has put his recent poor form behind him to come from the back of the field and claim a thrilling victory.

But it wasn't from the cockpit of his mis-firing Honda-powered McLaren.

Former two-time world champion Alonso has endured a frustrating season as mechanical problems and on-track incidents cruelled his campaign.

The Spaniard has finished in the points only once this campaign – a tenth position in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

But the 33-year-old showed his troubles haven’t diminished his imperious touch around a racetrack after he stormed home in a three-lap go-kart race at Daytona Sandown Park in England.

Starting from the back of the field in a Dmax Kart, Alonso bullied his way through the congested pack before storming up behind the leader.

Waiting for the perfect chance to pounce, Alonso takes the lead on the final lap and cruises to the chequered flag.
