A Major League Baseball star has posted a gruesome photo of his face just five days after being struck in the cheek by a 142km/h pitch.

The photo shows Giancarlo Stanton with two black eyes, a swollen cheek and a heavily stitched lip as a result of the pitch from Milwaukee Brewers’ Mike Fiers.

“The Aftermath...Making huge progress!! Want to thank everyone who has played a part in my recovery process. Your kind messages, thoughts & prayers have meant the world to me. Pushing forward,” the Miami Marlins star wrote on Instagram.

Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart said Stanton would return to action in no time.

“I mean, his tooth came through his cheek. We’re just happy he’s OK. A little plastic surgery and a little dental work and he’ll be good to go.”

The pitcher also found a silver lining after predicting that the MVP candidate would have permanent scars.

“Chicks dig scars, I guess,” Cosart said.

The 24-year-old suffered multiple fractures, lacerations and dental damage in the sickening blow.
