Mir wins Moto3 title at Phillip Island

Leopard Racing's Joan Mir was crowned Moto3 world champion after the Spaniard won a rain-shortened race at Phillip Island on Sunday.

Mir was leading with seven laps to go when a storm rolled across the circuit, forcing stewards to red flag the race, which handed the 20-year-old the title.

The win was Mir's ninth in a stunning 2017 campaign.

"It's unbelievable ... I've dreamt about this for a lot of years," Mir said.

"I've worked really hard for this and now to achieve it is amazing.

"I'm a world champion - it's incredible to say."

Australian wildcard Tom Toparis (Cube Racing) finished 22nd of 24 riders still on the circuit when the race was stopped.

Mir's Leopard Racing teammate Livio Loi completed a good day for the team with a second-placed finish.

Jorge Martin (Del Conca Gresini) started from pole position in bright sunshine, but had to settle for third after the race was called off.

Seven riders crashed out of the action-packed race and several more slid off the circuit but were able to rejoin the field.
