Lay day called in Fiji Pro surfing

Taj Burrow's career in the World Surf League has been prolonged for at least another day after low swells caused competition to be abandoned at the Fiji Pro.

Burrow, surfing in his last competitive event after 18 years on the tour, was due to face Hawaiian John John Florence in a do-or-die third-round heat on Tuesday.

"We've had a great run so far running in the first two days of the window and getting the first two rounds done but today there is not much swell on offer," WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel said.

"There are only three-foot leftover waves at Cloudbreak."

The swell is expected to increase marginally between Wednesday and Friday and better waves are forecast from the weekend.

Australian Matt Banting will compete against 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina when surfing resumes and Mick Fanning will take on Adam Melling in an all-Aussie heat.

Australian Josh Kerr will face France's Jeremy Flores and fellow Aussies Adrian Buchan and world ratings leader Matt Wilkinson will take on Brazilians Miguel Pupo and Alejo Muniz, respectively.

Organisers have until June 17 to complete the competition.
