Journalist predicts end for Hayne in NFL

An award winning journalist has called for the San Francisco 49ers to call time on Jarryd Hayne's fledging NFL career because of the Australian’s spate of errors.

Hayne found himself on the wrong end of a lashing from Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King after he coughed up possession during the San Francisco 49ers' 25-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Hayne had only the one touch in the win against the Ravens but it was a near-disaster when he fumbled a punt return.

However, a teammate managed to dive on the ball and the home side were able to retain possession.

But it was enough for King to predict the end of the 49ers' experiment with the former Parramatta Eel.

"Well, the Jarryd Hayne story was fun while it lasted," King wrote in his column, Monday Morning Quarterback.

"For the second time in the first six weeks of the season, Hayne fumbled a punt, and the 49ers are not good enough to hand away potential possessions once every three games because they like the former rugby league player's potential.

"It'll be interesting to see how coach Jim Tomsula handles the punt-return job going forward."

Meanwhile, Hayne's limited playing time with the 49ers could be about to receive another blow after new emerged the franchise were trialling veteran running back Pierre Thomas.

The 30-year-old Thomas, a free agent after leaving the New Orleans Saints, has reportedly been with the club as it looks for backup for the injured Carlos Hyde.

Hayne and veteran Reggie Bush have both been used to replace Hyde, who has copped a heavy workload of 104 carries in his second year as a professional.

However, Thomas is yet to sign a contract with the franchise.
